Budgeting tips for irregular months
Budgets fail when they demand perfection. They succeed when they reveal patterns: where money leaks when you are tired, which months inflate because of travel, which subscriptions survived because cancellation takes bandwidth.
Categories as hypotheses
Start broad; split categories only where confusion persists. A “life happens” line is realism, not cheating. If it grows, investigate with curiosity.
Buffers
Assume something will break inconveniently; keep a cash cushion distinct from long-term investing when possible. Liquidity buys optionality.
Monthly repair
Review as maintenance, not trial. Ask what changed, what surprised you, what you will try next month. Shame hides information; curiosity reveals it.
